Fred Armisen opened his “SNL” monologue by recreating his audition for the show. He began by saying he’s been doing a one-man play for the past six months about his experience on the sketch comedy show called, “Love For New York, I did Saturdays Right,” and then performed some scenes from it. Armisen talked about how during his audition he did a few of the impressions. Then then launched into some impressions of Frank Sinatra, Liberace, and Prince. He also talked about how he felt after getting on “SNL.” Armisen also related how the guys in his neighborhood treated him after his made the cast of “Saturday Night Live.”
This marks Armisen’s very first time hosting “Saturday Night Live.” Of course, Armisen was a cast member of the sketch comedy show from 2002 until 2013, during which he appeared in more than 850 skits and created numerous characters such as punk rocker Ian Rubbish, political comic Nicholas Fehn, Stuart from the “Californians,” and ill-prepared singer Garth of the musical duo Garth and Kat (Kristen Wiig). As noted, during his time on the show, Armisen also impersonated a number of other well-known figures, including President Obama, Joy Behar and Queen Elizabeth.
Since leaving “Saturday Night Live,” Armisen has continued to work on his IFC hit “Portlandia,” which is produced by “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels. He also serves as the band leader of “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
